National
• Over 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States
• In 2007, approximately 5.8 million children were involved in an estimated 3.2 million child abuse reports and allegations
• A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds
• Almost five children die everyday as a result of child abuse. More than three out of four are under the age of 4
• It is estimated that between 60-85% of child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates

• Since 2003, Florida’s rate of child abuse victims has remained above 32 victims per 1,000 children in the general population
• In 2005, the child victim rate of Florida was 32.1 – doubling New York’s rate
• In 2005, Florida’s child abuse victim rate was three times larger than the national median
• In 2005, Florida recorded 130,633 child victims of abuse and neglect

• Verified child abuse cases: 649 – decreased by 189 from 2007-2008
• Children in care out-of-home: 469 – increased by 71 from 2007-2008
